PDL SOCCER

McCurdy PDL player of the week

After recording two shutouts on the road last week, Yakima Reds goaltender Robert McCurdy was named the Premier Development League's national player of the week.

McCurdy started his week by helping Yakima blank the Abbotsford Mariners 2-0 on Saturday. He helped preserve the whitewash with two timely second-half saves.

The next day, McCurdy came up big to help stop the Vancouver Whitecaps U-23s 1-0.

Vancouver, which scored five goals on division-leading Tacoma the previous night, outshot Yakima 25-12, but McCurdy didn't break as the Reds stopped the Whitecaps' five-game unbeaten streak.

It was McCurdy's second and third shutouts of the season.

"Robert stepped up and showed his experience this weekend," Yakima coach Hector Vega said in a release from the league. "Experience dominated youth and quickness this time around, and Robert was a key aspect of that this past weekend in Canada.

"He helped keep the Yakima Reds' hopes for the playoffs alive."

The sweep improved Yakima to 8-4-1 and moved them back ahead of Vancouver into second place in the Northwest Division. The top two teams in the division advance to the playoffs.

The Reds, who are seeking their first playoff berth since 2000, control their own destiny. After taking this weekend off, the Reds return to action with a home game on July 11 against Vancouver.
